Integrated Architectures for Cognition and Control in Robotics
Abstract: This talk will describe lessons learned from developing integrated architectures for knowledge representation, reasoning, control, and learning in robotics. In a departure from the prevalent trend of developing and using data-driven deep learning methods for various problems, I will advocate the design of architectures that computationally encode key principles such as step-wise iterative refinement and ecological rationality, and leverage the complementary strengths of knowledge-based and data-driven reasoning and learning methods. I will illustrate the capabilities of these architectures in the context of fundamental problems such as vision-based planning and ad hoc teamwork. I will emphasize the benefits of exploiting the interplay between reasoning, learning, and control, and discuss some future research directions.
